5 ways to fight climate change

There are as many ways to combat climate change as there are people on the planet. We can all find our own way to make a difference. These are the five steps Walki recommends. We hope they inspire you as well.

Insulate efficiently

Buildings represent approximately 40% of total energy consumption in the EU. Reducing the amount of energy used for heating and cooling homes, offices and other establishments would therefore have a tremendous impact.

In the long term, insulation is the simplest and most effective way to make a building more energy efficient. Proper insulation can reduce the energy bill for good with no extra effort or sacrifice.

Walki produces technical facings that enhance and improve the features and effectivity of different insulation materials.

Choose fiber over plastic

The use of synthetic materials affects the environment in many ways. In reality, materials made from fossil fuels – such as plastic – are easily replacable.

The basis of countless Walki products is a renawable and recyclable fiber-based material. Many are unaware of how advanced lamination techniques can turn paper, cardboard and fiberboards into moisture, grease, UVA and freeze-resistant packaging.
How billions of yoghurt, cheese and juice cartons have either an aluminium or plastic lid. All of them could easily be replaced with our paper-based product Walki®Lid.

Recycle and reuse

Many of us associate the word ’recycling’ with collecting and sorting old, used packaging. Reusing old materials is just as important.

So far, recycled materials containing ink have been dangerous to reuse as the remnants of chemicals can absorb into food and then the body.

Luckily, Walki has a solution to offer. Walki®MOST (Mineral Oil Safe Technology) creates a surface on the packaging that blocks hazardous chemicals. The technology offers a well-researched, safe way to reuse materials and avoid double-packaging.

Reducing food waste

As reported by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) 28% of all produced food is never eaten. According to National Geographic, over 50% of food goes to waste, and therefore 25% of all produced calories.

This takes un unnecessary toll on water, energy, logistics and human resources.

There are numerous ways to reduce food waste. The Walki technology laminates fiber-based packaging so it protects food from light, moisture, oxygen, aromas, cold and gases. This helps prolong the product’s lifespan and allows a larger distribution.

Clean technologies

Digitalisation is a breakthrough that will increase efficiency, productivity and reduce environmental impact. The most interesting technologies revolve around the IoT, Internet of Things.

With the IoT, countless things and objects will be personalised, recognised and controlled digitally with RFID antennas. The antennas provide a link between the reader and product, packaging and tags. This is where Walki enters the picture.

Walki has developed a new, patented and award-winning technology for flexible circuit boards. The laser technology is far more eco-friendly than the traditional etching. Yet it is just as efficient. In fact, Walki®Pantenna is the most advanced option: more precise, 10 times quicker in production, cheaper and recyclable, it’s compatible with nearly every material.
