From plastic to fibre

Amid the current turbulent global political and economic landscape, a major transformation is underway in the packaging sector: plastics solutions are giving way to fibre-based packaging. A combination of environmental concerns, regulatory pressures, and evolving consumer preferences are propelling this transition that is often referred to as the paperisation of packaging.

While plastics is still a viable option when it comes to packaging certain goods such as sensitive food content, we are witnessing a development where higher barrier polymer-based packaging is increasingly being replaced with paperbased alternatives, providing the same functional properties while enhancing circularity and reducing environmental impact. Fibre-based packaging also offers significant benefits to brand owners in the form of lower EPR fees, better recyclability, lower carbon footprint and a more sustainable raw material base.

In addition, fibre-based packaging strengthens brand perception, as research consistently shows that consumers increasingly favour packaging solutions they consider sustainable. The growing wellness and health trend further reinforces this shift: amid concerns related to plastics, many consumers view fibre-based packaging as a safer and more natural alternative to plastics.

Fibre-based packaging solutions help companies stay competitive, answer to consumers’ need for sustainable packaging, comply with regulations, reduce environmental impact, and align with circular economy principles. Fibre-based packaging is no longer an emerging alternative; it is an available solution ready for most low- and mediumbarrier applications, supported by mature infrastructure, favourable regulation and proven consumer acceptance.

The aim of this white paper is to shed light on the transition from plastics to fibre-based solutions and present the benefits of the transition.

The information is based on interviews with Walki experts and findings from independent research organisations.
